Design and Silk Painting
Course: one day for beginners
$A195 per day
The aim of a beginners' day is firstly to
introduce students to
silk-painting and explain the technique in the larger context of the
textile world. I will also give some brief information on dyes, how
they work, and show the variety of silks that can be used.
Then I will demonstrate or explain many of the materials involved in
silk-painting so that students can leave with sufficient knowledge to
work on their own after the course.
I prefer "starter" students to paint and create a sampler on which they
try several techniques and use different resists, dyes and paints. They
should I prefer "starter" students to paint and create a sampler on

should take notes about materials and techniques used.
Design and Silk Painting :
one day workshops for experienced painters
$A195 per day
When people book into
this class I always ask how much experience they
have had with silk painting, but often find (to my surprise) they know
very little. This is not the fault of the student, it is more often
because they have not been well taught. I have therefore found from
time to time that I have had to teach "experienced" students how to
silk-paint from scratch, which is unfair on other students in the class
who want to move on to new techniques.
Therefore, on a one-day course, I prefer only to teach those students
who have already attended a course with me or who can confirm that they
have achieved a certain standard in using gutta, resists and dyes with
another teacher.
Some students who attend one-day workshops or courses like to
bring a project along and work on it with advice or input from me. I
can discuss individual needs with each student in advance of the
workshop day to ensure that appropriate frames, silks etc are
available.
Other students, who want to learn new and more advanced
techniques, can experiment with layered dyeing; developing, planning
and preparing designs; drafting designs onto silk; coloured and other
resists etc. I can demonstrate these techniques during the day.
A variety of silk blanks will be available to purchase. Frame
sizes should be discussed with me in advance, if you are bringing your
own, or if you need me to provide a specific size.
Email us with
your questions - we will be able to work out which class will suit you
best.

How to find the Abfab Art Studio
Classes in Sydney are held in my Art Studio.
Level 1
16 Cahill Street
Camperdown NSW
Tel: 0408-801-808
Driving directions: If you're coming from the Harbour Bridge or through the city, drive west on Broadway until it becomes Parramatta Road.
Make a sharp right turn into Pyrmont Bridge Road, Billy Hydes' music store will be on your left. Pull into their driveway, drive through to the little back street (Cahill St), and my Studio is directly in front of you.
Continue left down Cahill Street, and cross Mathieson, where you may find parking.
If coming from the west, drive along Parramatta Road towards the city:
- turn left into Mathieson Street, which is just BEFORE Pyrmont Bridge Road
- turn left into Cahill Street, and find a parking space
- if no parking available, try the other little side streets - Water and Mathieson
- after you've parked, walk back to Cahill St and locate number 16
- walk up the stairs, and enter the glass door on the right at the top
